Our Mission
Since our first radio show in June 2014, Know Your Rights Group has been helping Australians understand their legal rights — in plain English, without the jargon, and without the cost of a lawyer.
The platform that started with a question
Know Your Rights Group began with its first radio show on 17 June 2014, after co-founder Mike Palmer saw first-hand how many Australians faced legal and administrative situations without knowing their basic rights. From fines and banking disputes to employment issues and consumer guarantees, the same pattern repeated: people didn't know where to start, what questions to ask, or what options were available.
What began as a small educational resource has grown into a community of more than 17,000 members and over 150,000 followers across Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Today KYR runs a fortnightly live radio show and podcast, publishes the Know Your Rights book, offers a Home Study Course and full-day webinars, and hosts a Members Only forum where Australians share experiences and support each other.
Our approach is simple: provide clear, practical information so people can make informed decisions. We don't give legal advice. We give people the confidence to ask better questions, understand their position, and take the next step.
The team
The people behind KYR
Mike Palmer
Co-founder & radio host
Mike is one of the founders of Know Your Rights Group, which began with its first radio show on 17 June 2014. He has a background in success coaching, and his own experiences with fines and court proceedings led to years of research and practical experience, which he now shares to help Australians better understand their rights and how the system works.
Darryl O’Bryan
Co-host & community legal researcher
Darryl established the Community Law Resources Group (later the Community Law Resources Association) and has long been involved in community legal research. He officially joined KYR on 1 September 2015.
Darren Dixon
Co-host & constitutional researcher
Darren is an independent researcher specialising in Australia’s constitutional framework and operates ConstitutionWatch.com.au. He joined KYR in early 2020.
